  • Matt is a partner in Hamilton Stephens Steele + Martin’s Bankruptcy, Restructuring + Debtor/Creditors’ Rights practice group, where he advises clients across the full spectrum of complex financial distress—guiding corporate debtors through sophisticated reorganizations while helping creditors strategically protect and maximize recovery on their claims.

Matt represents corporate debtors at every stage of the Chapter 11 process, from pre-filing strategy, first-day motions, cash-collateral use, Section 363 asset sales, and related financing matters through contested plan negotiation and confirmation. He has guided numerous companies to successfully confirmed plans of reorganization, enabling them to restructure their balance sheets, resolve creditor claims, and emerge as going concerns. Much of Matt’s most valuable work, however, occurs well before any filing—he counsels financially distressed businesses through out-of-court workouts and restructurings, negotiating directly with secured lenders and other key stakeholders to engineer consensual solutions that preserve enterprise value and avoid the cost and uncertainty of formal bankruptcy.

On the creditor side, Matt represents secured and unsecured creditors, lenders, and other parties-in-interest in bankruptcy proceedings and collection actions, advising on claim treatment, plan objections, contested matters, and the enforcement of rights against debtors and collateral.

Matt also regularly counsels guarantors on negotiating significant reductions in their exposure on business debt, and handles complex commercial litigation and collection actions in state and federal courts.  Matt is licensed to practice law in both North Carolina and Virginia.

Matt earned his law degree from Washington & Lee University School of Law where he served as a board member of the German Law Journal and worked as a legal extern in the University’s Office of General Counsel. Prior to law school Matt earned his undergraduate degree from St. Lawrence University where he was a member of the Omicron Delta Kappa national leadership honor society.

Matt lives in Charlotte with his wife and two sons. Outside of work, he enjoys watching sports, playing golf, and spending time with his family.
