  • Known as a creative problem solver, John has practiced law for over 30 years and has a wealth of litigation experience including having been lead counsel on jury trials in Maryland, North Carolina and Federal Courts and having handled appellate work up to and including to the US Supreme Court.

    While John’s litigation practice has been wide ranging and has included professional negligence, trucking and motor vehicle accidents, explosions, product liability, personal injury, real estate and wrongful death, much of John’s practice has been devoted to construction litigation and he is active in the North Carolina Bar Association’s Construction Law section, having served on its Section Council and as the Inaugural Chair of its Dispute Resolution Committee. Joining HSSM in 2023, John is pleased to be working primarily within the firm’s Construction Law and Commercial Litigation sections.

    In addition to his work at HSSM, John is certified by the NCDRC to conduct Superior Court Mediations and serves as a mediator through ongmediation.com. John is also a founder of the North Carolina Civil Collaborative Law Association’s where he serves on the Board of Directors and as the Chair of the Construction Law Committee.

    John earned his law degree at Emory University School of Law and his undergraduate degree from Connecticut College. He has lived in North Carolina for over 25 years and is an avid hiker, biker and sailor.
